About TypeFlow
TypeFlow is a free, distraction-free typing test and touch-typing trainer. Measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM), track your accuracy, and practice with timed tests, fixed word counts, or curated quotes.
How WPM is calculated
One "word" is standardized as five characters. Your WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the elapsed minutes. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, while net WPM counts only correct ones — the gap between them is your error cost.
Practice that targets your weak keys
Turn on the keyboard heatmap to see which keys you miss most often. The Stats page ranks your slowest keys so your practice stays focused instead of random.
Test rules
Timed tests keep adding words until the clock ends. Word, quote, lesson, custom, code, and drill tests finish when the final target is typed. WPM uses correct characters; raw WPM uses every keystroke. Accuracy is based on all key presses, including mistakes that were later corrected.
Practice modes
- Time measures sustained speed against a fixed clock.
- Words gives a fixed-length random word run.
- Lessons use clear accuracy and WPM targets for each skill.
- Custom and code let you paste or upload material and save repeatable practices.
- Drills are generated from your weak keys or recent mistakes.
Code mode rules
Code mode treats spaces, tabs, and line breaks as visible targets: ·, ⇥, and ↵. Use Space, Tab, and Enter to type those markers. The result card separates structural characters, punctuation symbols, and letters so you can see what actually slowed you down.
Local data and backups
Your results, practice library, settings, weak-key data, and streaks are stored only in this browser. Use Settings to export a full backup before changing devices or clearing browser storage.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row: a s d f and j k l ;.
- Prioritize accuracy first — speed follows clean technique.
- Practice short sessions daily rather than long, tiring ones.
- Don't look at the keyboard; trust your muscle memory.

Typing test FAQ
What does this free typing test measure?
TypeFlow measures net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, consistency, character errors, and weak keys. The breakdown shows where you lost speed instead of giving you only one final number.
What is a good WPM score?
About 40 WPM is a useful everyday baseline. A clean 50 to 60 WPM is comfortable for many office tasks, and 70+ WPM is fast when accuracy stays high.
Which practice mode should I use first?
Use a 60-second timed test for a baseline. Use lessons for touch typing technique, word tests for accuracy, custom text for real work, and code mode if symbols or indentation slow you down.
Should I practice speed or accuracy first?
Practice accuracy first if you are below 95% or if raw WPM is much higher than net WPM. Once clean typing feels stable, speed work becomes more useful.
How often should I practice typing?
Five to ten focused minutes a day is enough for most learners. Short, clean sessions usually beat long sessions where accuracy falls apart.
