The quick benchmark

Around 40 WPM is close to average for many adults. Fifty WPM is solid for general office work. Sixty WPM feels comfortable for most writing and school tasks. Seventy to eighty WPM is fast for everyday use. One hundred WPM is realistic for some trained typists, but it's well above average.

How WPM is calculated

WPM means words per minute, but typing tests don't count real words. A standard typing “word” is five characters, including spaces. If you type 300 correct characters in one minute, that's 60 WPM. This standard makes scores comparable across different texts.

Raw WPM vs net WPM

Raw WPM counts every keystroke, including mistakes. Net WPM counts correct output. The gap between the two is your error cost. If your raw score is 75 but your net score is 58, your fingers are moving fast enough; errors are stealing the result.

Accuracy changes the meaning of every score

A 70 WPM score at 90% accuracy isn't as useful as it looks. Real work includes corrections, names, numbers, punctuation, and formatting. For most people, a good target is at least 95% accuracy, with 97% or higher as a cleaner long-term goal.

Test type matters

You'll score higher on common words than on quotes, code, numbers, or unfamiliar text. That doesn't mean one test is fake. It means different tests measure different parts of typing. Compare scores only when the test type is similar.

What should you aim for next?

If you're under 30 WPM, aim for control and home-row confidence. If you're around 40, aim for 50 with fewer mistakes. If you're around 60, practice punctuation and real text. If you're above 80, weak keys and consistency matter more than raw speed.

Good to know

What is a good typing speed?

For everyday use, 60 to 80 WPM with high accuracy is good. Around 40 WPM is close to average.

Is 50 WPM good?

Yes. 50 WPM is good enough for many office and school tasks, especially with strong accuracy.

Is accuracy more important than WPM?

Accuracy comes first. A slightly slower accurate typist often finishes real work faster than a faster typist who makes many corrections.
